In dengue fever, Pitta dosha gets aggravated which causes “Dandaka Jwara” or “Pittaja Jvara” according to Ayurveda. It is an acute viral fever caused by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito, which spreads the fever. As per Ayurvedic principles, Pitta dosha manages the metabolic system, including digestion, ingestion of biomolecules, and elimination of toxic substances. Ayurveda offers effective home remedies to help control and treat the symptoms of dengue. There are several Ayurvedic herbs that help maintain the body temperature and increase the platelet and white blood cell count which are used in the treatment.

Symptoms: It is mainly characterized by high fever, severe pain in the joints and muscles, and reduced platelet count. The fever mostly subsides within a week, but it is said to be more dangerous for children and old people.

Beneficial plants and herbs for treating Dengue fever:

  • Neem- (Scientific name: Azadirachta indica) Known for its anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. Ayurveda suggests that neem extracts can inhibit the growth of one of the four dengue virus types.

  • Giloy-(Scientific name: Tinospora cordifolia) Considered an ultimate treatment for dengue fever in Ayurveda. It is known to boost immunity and help fight viral infections. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-pyretic properties.

  • Tulsi-(Scientific name: Ocimum sanctum)A popular herb in Ayurveda known for its immune-boosting and anti-viral properties. Consuming tulsi leaves can help build immunity and alleviate symptoms of dengue fever .

  • Papaya leaves-(Scientific name: Carica papaya)Papaya leaves contain enzymes that increase platelet count and help reduce fever. Ayurveda suggests that papaya leaf juice can help in the recovery of dengue fever patients.

  • Haridra (Turmeric)-(Scientific name: Curcuma longa) It acts as a powerful herb in terms of boosting immunity. It helps to speed up the recovery.

  • Ushira-(Scientific name: Andropogon muricatus) Due to its nutritional power, is known to increase platelets number, haemoglobin level, total WBC and different WBC count.

Fumigation: Herbal fumigation can be done using Neem (Azadirachta indica), Kalamegha (Andrographis paniculata), Haridra (Curcuma longa), and Ushira (Vettivera zeyzanoids) to prevent dengue. These help to create a perfectly neutral environment that resists the virus from propagation and repels mosquitoes. The indirect inhalation of these fumes is also a passive method of prevention, as it triggers immunity.
